At birth Alfred was diagnosed with Congenital Bilateral Microphthalmia /Sclerocornea; an anomaly that sadly reduced his visual capabilities. The severity of his condition increased the risk of glaucoma and total vision loss. Unable to receive the treatment he needed in Venezuela, his parents turned to the IKF’s Wonderfund for assistance.
Since 2007, Doctors at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of Miami have done everything possible to correct Alfred’s vision. Alfred received a cornea transplant on May 2, 2007, but over the years developed abnormalities which impaired his vision and worsened his condition; this lead to the enucleation of both eyes on April 2013. A few weeks later he was able to receive his prosthesis.
Now 16 years old, Alfred’s journey is not over as he will need to replace his ocular prosthesis within a year and half due to growth and facial changes.
Alfred is very outgoing and has a great outlook on life; he is eternally grateful for the support his has received throughout the years and hopes he can continued to count on your heartfelt generosity.
